Obituary

Vera Brook, of Wilmington, Delaware, formerly of Philadelphia and Chicago, passed away on May 26, 2021 at age 99. Vera was born on August 15, 1921 in Rostov-on-Don, Russia and emigrated to the United States with her parents at age one. She graduated from Von Steuben High School and soon met her future husband, Calvin. They were long time residents of Skokie, where their children grew up. She worked at the USO during WW2, with Calvin in the printing business and with her father in his lampshade frame business. Later she was an outstanding customer service representative for Rand McNally Corporation, placing maps and globes in schools across the country. After a move to Philadelphia at nearly age 60 she started a new career in pre-school education and taught for 20 years. Vera was lifelong music lover, especially of the symphony. She was a gentle soul loved by many for her genuine warmth and unlimited kindness.

Devoted daughter of the late Leon and the late Tanya. Beloved wife of the late Calvin Brook. Dear sister of the late Beverly Singer (the late Bernard). Loving mother of Michael, Anita Brook (James) Dupree, Steven (Melissa Deng), and the late Barbara. Proud grandmother of Nicole (Andrew), Janine (Tom), Gia (Mischa). Cherished great-grandmother of Eva, Ellison, Anastasia, Octavia, Soleil and Adi. Fond aunt of Mark (Stephanie) Singer and Richard Singer. Longtime companion of the late Alfred Butscher. She will be missed by her cousins, many friends and the numerous pre-schoolers she taught over the years.
