Obituary

Ruben (Bob) Vernof, 94, of Glenview; beloved husband of Diana (nee' Berlin) for almost 51 years; loving father of Lisa (Steve) Bathey, Jeanne (Arnie) Grant, and Karen (Josef) Gurian; beloved stepfather of Sue Fink, Ruth Kreiger, and Laura (Yoel) Seton; adored grandfather of Eliana, Kaita, Sam, and Margo Gurian; Carter (Lizzie) and Michael Grant, and Danny and Yishai Seton; great grandfather of Sadie and Tessa Grant. Preceded in death by his first beloved wife, Evelyn (nee' Voolach) Vernof. Cherished by family, friends, and all who made his acquaintance.
Ruben was a successful CPA who treated clients as family. Additionally, he was passionate about his work with the Berner Charitable and Scholarship Foundation, administering grants to university students and watching them succeed over the years. He was a man of many interests, including history, art, and current events. He was admired for his values and intelligence, and cherished for his kindness and wisdom, by all who knew him. Ruben, a proud Navy veteran, made it his goal to live to 106 years of age, thus "beating the record" of another veteran, Henry Flora, who lived to be 105; while he didn't make that goal, he lived a full life on his own terms, surrounded by family and love.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dave Thomas Foundation, a foster care and adoption charity www.davethomasfoundation.org.
