Obituary

Renee (nee Wlodawski) Schickler, MD, 75, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026. Beloved wife and best friend of Howard for 54 wonderful years; adored mother of Laura Anne; much-loved sister of Mitchell (Joanne) Wlodawski; dear sister-in-law of Terry Schickler and Paula (the late Herbert) Gewirtz; treasured aunt of Brian Wlodawski, Jonathan Yacker, Susan Gewirtz (Stuart Martin), Andrea Gewirtz, and the late Glenn Gewirtz; cherished great-aunt of Michael Luis Martin; and a treasured friend to many. Renee was born in Amsterdam to the late Morris and Lily Wlodawski. As a young child, her family immigrated to the United States in search of greater opportunities and settled in Brooklyn, New York. She attended the Bronx High School of Science and later Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, where she met her beloved Howard while working on "Kingsman" the college newspaper, where Renee served as an articles editor and Howard as photo editor. After their marriage, Renee and Howard relocated to Milwaukee, where Renee attended the Medical College of Wisconsin. They later moved to Chicago, where Renee completed her fellowship in Endocrinology at the University of Illinois Chicago. Renee practiced medicine for more than 40 years as an endocrinologist. She worked for many years at Ravenswood Hospital and later served on staff at Illinois Masonic and St. Francis Hospitals. Renee was a pioneer, attending medical school at a time when few women pursued advanced medical degrees. She was deeply passionate about her work, always placing her patients first and never allowing the changing landscape of medicine to affect the personal care she provided. She made herself consistently available to those who depended on her. When her own medical challenges forced her to retire earlier than she wished, Renee continued her commitment to medicine by teaching residents at Rosalind Franklin University - Lovell Federal Health Care Center. Renee will be dearly missed by all whose lives she touched. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to The Ark Chicago: www.arkchicago.com. Synagogue service will be held Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Am Yisrael Conservative Congregation, 4 Happ Road, Northfield, Illinois. Interment to follow at Shalom Memorial Park.
