Obituary

Melvin ‘Mel’ G. Nelson, 85, of Flushing, NY passed away on August 17th, 2021 in Forest Hills, NY after a brief illness.

Melvin was born in Portland, Maine to Samuel and Edith Nelson on February 17th, 1936. He went to high school at Deering High and went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Statistics from Boston University. He worked as a Senior City Planner for the NYC Board of Education for over 30 years after serving in the Army. He was an avid sports fan, but especially loved cheering for his beloved Red Sox, and later, after settling in Flushing, the Mets. He was a long time member of Temple Gates of Prayer in Flushing, NY.

Mel is survived by his wife, Rochelle, his daughters Stacey and Amy, as well as multiple nieces and nephews and close friends who were like family to him. He is preceded in death by his father Samuel, his mother Edith, and his 4 older siblings: sisters Bertha, Ruth, Rose, and brother Robert.

Memorial donations may be made to the organization of your choice in Mel’s name. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all who have been such a help and support through these last months.
