Obituary

Melvin Ellis, of Highland Park, beloved husband of the late Dorothy Ellis, nee Goldman, for 59 years; treasured father of Nancy (Andy) Mills, John (Tami Snow) Ellis, and Karen (Seth) Frey; cherished grandpa/boppy of Brad, Tommy and Justin Mills, Naomi and Taliah Ellis, and Casey, Leah and Jayne Frey; adored brother of the late Bert (Alice) Ellis; uncle and friend to many, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2022. A WWII veteran who saw extensive combat in Europe, Mel went on to become a beloved P.E. teacher and coach at Lane Tech High School in Chicago. Soon after, he and his brother Bert founded Apache Day Camp in Northbrook, where he brought joy to children throughout the North Shore. Whether you knew him for a lifetime or a few minutes, Mel had a unique ability to connect with everyone he met; he made us laugh, he made us appreciate life, and he showed us he cared. The memorial service will be livestreamed on Wednesday, July 13, 10:30 a.m. CT. Please contact the family for details. Contributions may be made to the Mel and Dorothy Ellis Sportsmanship Award at jccchicago.org/donate or the charity of your choice. Info: The Goldman Funeral Group (847) 478-1600.
