Obituary

Max Shaftal, age 66, of Northbrook, Max was born in Havana, Cuba, grew up in Skokie and attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he earned his civil engineering degree before earning his J.D. at DePaul University. Max went on to have a distinguished career as an attorney, specializing in patent, trademark and copyright law. He was known for his expertise, integrity, dedication, and was widely respected, trusted and cherished by his colleagues and clients. He was the beloved husband for almost 40 years of Melany Shaftal, nee Turner; loving and prideful father of Alex (Casey) Shaftal and Zachary (Sarah) Shaftal; adored grandfather of Penny, Jamie, Jude and Samuel; devoted son of Bernardo (Perla) and the late Ofelia Shaftal; big-hearted brother of Jennifer (Charles) Sulkin and the late Jerry Shaftal; cherished son-in-law of Marlene and the late Sonny Turner; dear brother-in-law of Neil (Mindy) Turner and Kevin (Lisa) Turner; treasured nephew, cousin, uncle, and loyal friend to all. Max left deep impressions in the hearts of those in his life. From his large extended family to his many friends from all walks of life, all will remember his kindness and generosity, his magnetic and charismatic presence, his positive attitude and strong work ethic, and his humorous and lovable spirit. He was a favorite, and everyone’s friend. Max will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who love him dearly.

Service Monday 11:30 a.m. CT at Congregation Beth Shalom, 3433 Walters Avenue, Northbrook.
