In Loving Memory of

Judith Lee Calica

May 18th, 1946 - March 31st, 2018

Obituary

Judith (Judy) Calica (neé Mozarsky) died on March 31 2018, at age 71, following a long illness. Born and bred in Brooklyn, NY, Judy was married to her Brooklyn College sweetheart, the late Richard H. Calica, for 47 years. From the moment they met, they were off and running, first to Los Angeles and then to the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago. Settling in Chicago, Richard specialized in child welfare administration and Judy opened a private psychotherapy practice. Together they were known as the “Calicas”, dynamic, outspoken, opinionated, certain they were always right. Anyone who saw them together knew they were deeply in love and devoted to each other.

Judy was known for her direct and highly empathic style which proved to be enduringly helpful to many. In addition to her practice, Judy’s group work with parents who experienced pregnancy loss and early infant death was highly regarded throughout the Chicago area. Many families have cited her exceptional understanding and skill as the most significant factor in facilitating their recovery from unspeakable loss and envisioning futures with less pain.

Judy devoted countless volunteer hours to the infertility support organization RESOVLE, offering comfort and practical advice to hundreds of people hoping to build families.

Judy is survived by her long awaited, hard to come by, beloved son Andrew, his wife Jackie, and their delightful children, Leo Jonathan and Somi Renée. In addition, she is survived by her most beloved sister, Gail Forman and her son Ross. Judy is also survived by her cousin Maralyn Occhiuto.

Judy was a great friend to Laurie, Renee and Ken, Margie and Mark, Pat, JoAnn, Sylvia, Tamy, Suzanne and many others who will not soon forget her.

For all of these reasons, and many more, Judy considered herself to be the luckiest, unlucky girl in the world!

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Fistula Foundation, fistulafoundation.org, or to the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, yivo.org/donation.

Burial will be private. A celebration of Judy’s life is being planned for a later date.
