Obituary
JOYCE SLOAN ANDERSON, an accomplished educator, writer, blogger and business consultant, and a remarkable wife, mother and grandmother, aunt and beloved friend of many, died peacefully on April 4, 2023 at her home in Linwood, NJ. She was 93 years of age. Born on March 14, 1930, in Paterson, NJ, she was the second daughter of Miriam (Marcus) Sloan, who taught English at a vocational school in Harlem, and Dr. Samuel Sloan, a prominent surgeon and Chief of Staff from Barnet Hospital. Joyce revered both of her parents. From a young age, Joyce showed a passion for reading and writing.
She graduated valedictorian of Eastside High School in Paterson and went on to earn BA and MA degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. After graduating, Joyce met the love of her life, B. Robert Anderson of Philadelphia. He proposed on the second date and they were married six months later. May 24 is their 70th anniversary.
Joyce's home was bursting with orchids of many colors and photographs of her growing family. Joyce raised three children in Margate, NJ, a beach community where everyone knew each other, and the kids could walk to the beach from their home. Joyce was the proud mother of Steven (Lauren), David (Adrienne) and Faith. She went to every Farm League, Little League, and Senior League game, especially the All-Star games throughout the state. Faith, who in later years she would call 4-5 times a day, came to most of these games too. She continued her legacy as the doting grandmother of Jason, Jennifer (Konstantin), Simon, (Natasha), Evan and Eden. Joyce was the sister of Shirley Sloan Fader.
Joyce taught in the Margate City school system for several years and was President of the local chapter of the Anti-Defamation League. She was a stay-at-home Mom for 10 years. She was a product of the women’s movement and went back to work at Atlantic Community College, where she rose to the level of Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Social Sciences Division. She introduced the first ever course on Race Relations at ACC and had an extraordinary influence on several thousand students of all ages and backgrounds. She was driven to understand and eliminate the social and economic oppression of women and minorities.
When Joyce re-entered the workforce, the roles reversed and her husband "Bob" cared for the teenagers at home during the day while starting a management consulting business, which took him on the road every few weeks for consulting assignments. Joyce came home from the College at night to casseroles and upside down pineapple cake cooked by Bob. Joyce joined the growing business after her career at ACC, which blessed them with the ability to travel the country and many foreign countries for work and pleasure, advising family-owned and Fortune 500 food distribution companies.
In her later years Joyce wrote five books: Courage in High Heels, three romance novels, and a collection of hundreds of her columns from the South Jersey Jewish Times, the New York Times, and the Philadelphia Inquirer. In her eighties she started a weekly Blog. She was fiercely political and wrote often about politics from her Democratic perspective. Many of her columns addressed cultural and sociological issues.
