Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Herbert Erik Horvitz, 87, December 19, 2023.

Beloved husband of Barbara, nee Hansen; devoted father of Bradley (Christina) Allen, Stayce Allen, Krystan (Terry) Horvitz, and Micah (Joseph) Lancman; cherished grandfather of Mitch Allen, Asher Lancman, and Sophie Lancman; dearest brother of Frieda (the late James) Koss and caring uncle of Robert (Nadia) Koss and the late Jennifer (Scott) Pruden.

Erik was a man whose life was a testament to the joy found in the simple pleasures of art, food, and the embrace of family. Whether it was admiring the strokes of a painting, the lines of a sculpture, or the melodies of music, he found enjoyment and inspiration in the diverse expressions of human creativity. His own artistic spirit flourished with many paintings, writings and recipe experiments of his own that he loved to share with family.

In his professional pursuits, he was a journalist who worked for CBS in Milwaukee, and CBS, NBC and Channel 11 in Chicago. He then used his skills to lead the training department at State Farm for several years before returning to work full-time as a freelance writer for magazines and other venues.

Amidst his love for art, his heart belonged to his family. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he cherished the moments spent surrounded by the laughter and warmth of his loved ones and stories shared.

As we mourn his passing, let us remember him for his kindness, his laughter that led to a knee slap if it was really funny, and his knowledge of news and events. May he rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the art, flavors, and love that defined his remarkable journey.

Contributions in Erik's memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
