Obituary

On Wednesday July 21, 2021 Elliot Sanford Tokar, loving husband and father, passed away peacefully with his family by his side at age 83.

Elliot was born on June 30, 1938 in Baltimore, MD to Solomon and Bessie Tokar. He first received his pharmacy degree and then his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1965 and practiced medicine as a pediatrician for over 40 years in Highland Park and East Brunswick, NJ. He married his college sweetheart Helen Barbara Shipley on August 20, 1963. Together they raised a son, Alex and a daughter, Michele.

Elliot had a passion for classical music. He also loved to ski, bike and play tennis. During his three years of US military service in Germany he embraced European culture and discovered a lasting love of travel. Together he and Barbara circled the globe with ski vacations in the French alps, treks into the jungles of Borneo, safaris across the Serengeti Plains and explorations from the Taj Mahal to the Galapagos Islands. In between trips there were weekends in New York at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and spontaneous visits to Princeton Record Exchange in search of that one missing Toscanini record for his collection. He was known for his great love of learning, his playful manner with friends and family, and his affectionate spirit.

Elliot is survived by his wife Barbara, his children Alex and Michele, his sister Marsha and his grandchildren Austin and Nicolette.

A funeral service will be held at Sol Levinson's Funeral Home, 8900 Reisterstown Road in Pikesville, MD on Friday July 23rd at 1:00 pm followed by a memorial at the family home in Highland Park, NJ on July 25th. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial donations be made to the Rutgers University Foundation in support of the Mouradian Laboratory Research Fund for Parkinson's Disease Research. Please send your donation to P.O. Box 193, New Brunswick, NJ 08903-0193. Gifts can also be made online at the following url: give.rutgers.edu/ElliotTokar.
