Obituary

Benjamin M. Blumberg, scientist and one time bon vivant died April 28, just two days before his 80th birthday. A man of many talents and interests, Ben graduated from The Exeter Academy, then Harvard, then the University of Chicago (Ph.D. in biochemistry). He was multi-lingual, studying French, German, Russian, Portuguese and Latin, and also a talented pianist. He traveled the world with friends and family and with his partner of many years, Rita Lenertz. Experiencing severe then profound hearing loss, he could no longer enjoy concerts, operas or theatre, but continued to write scientific papers, many of which were published, and to be an avid reader. He is survived by two sisters, Kathryn Wittenberg of Thousand Oaks, CA and Ellen Rubert of Chicago, a nephew, Sam Rubert, and Sam’s daughters Emerson and Noa, of Weston, FL.
