Obituary

Arthur A. Bierman, 98, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2022. Born and raised in Chicago, he was the son of the late Edward and Esther (Mandel) Bierman, and devoted older brother to Marvin (Charlene) Bierman. Art was married to the love of his life, the late Zora (Bass) for almost 62 years. He always talked of his love for Zora and their wonderful life together. His favorite line to others was, “We only had two fights during our marriage, and she won both!”

Art was a loving father to David (the late Katherine) Bierman (Merle Gleeson) and Lois Bierman, proud grandfather of Shanna Bierman (Lisa Hill) and Melissa (Michael) Dobkin, cherished great-grandfather of Desiree and Lyla Dobkin, fun uncle of Cynthia (Bierman) Triola, Pamela Bierman (Rick Christopherson), and Jeffrey (Gail) Bierman, and caring great-uncle to Anthony (Jessica) Triola and Chris Triola. He was a friend to everyone, whether he knew them well or they had just met.

Art lived through the Depression, attending 13 grammar schools before the family had enough money to pay the rent to stay in one place permanently. He became a ham radio operator in his youth and used his technical skills (particularly radar) while serving as a Staff Sergeant in the Marines on Guadalcanal during WWII, then later he ran phone patches between members of the military and their families back home during the Vietnam War; and before computers came into full operation, he participated in a daily activity where ham radio operators checked in from across the U.S. to indicate if their local hospitals needed eyes for a patient or had eyes available from a donor. He helped so many to see again by what he facilitated.

Art found his niche in sales and had a long, successful career in his own neon shop early on, then later with large outdoor sign companies. He was most proud of the signage (and scoreboards) he was involved with at Wrigley Field, Foremost Liquors, Gurnee Mills, and Superdawg, just to name a few. When he wasn’t working or talking to ham radio operators around the world, Art and Zora loved to travel within the U.S. and outside the country. The top of his wish list was to see the Egyptian Pyramids, and one year that wish was fulfilled.

Art’s humor, kindness, and inner strength carried him through everything life had in store for him, the good and the not so good. He put family and friends first and always moved forward doing what he thought was best. His life was an example to all. He was quite simply a very good man whose giant, gentle footsteps will be impossible to fill.
