Obituary

Anita Ethel Taub Hyman Kaplan Cutler, ten days short of her 101st birthday. Beloved wife of the late Benjamin I. Hyman and later, beloved wife of the late Abe Kaplan and the late Herman Cutler. Loving mother of Randy Hyman Shapiro (Marc) and Kerry (Michael) Leaf. Proud grandmother of Benjamin Leaf and Norma Leaf Reich (Evan). Predeceased by her dear sister Myra (Bob) Elman. Beloved aunt and cousin of many. Devoted daughter of the late Louis Taub and the late Claire Taub, nee Halpern.

Loving, gracious, and elegant, Anita changed so many lives for the better – in the Bronx and Manhattan; in Long Beach, New York; in Hallandale, Florida; and in Highland Park and Vernon Hills, Illinois. Her volunteer and philanthropic activities were memorable, enhanced by a particular gift for leadership. She was the ideal president of her daughters’ PTAs, her synagogue Sisterhood, the Brandeis National Women’s Committee South Florida Region, and the Papanicolaou Women’s Corps (now the Pap Corps Champions) of the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, where she was the very first volunteer president to raise $1,000,000.00 to support critical research.

Anita attended Hunter College and brought her intelligence to bear in many places. She worked as a medical receptionist in Long Beach, and she comforted babies. She was a renowned partygiver – and a frequently consulted jello mold instructor. Anita loved politics, and had no hesitation at expressing her support, as a lifelong Democrat, for important social causes and candidates. She loved the excitement of ballet, opera, art, and Broadway. And many of her most wished for travel dreams came true – England, France, Italy, and Israel.

Not least of all, Anita was a poet. She started her own business, “Designer Rhymes by Anita.” Whether to celebrate life’s special occasions or to explore life’s mysteries, her readers, without exception, loved what she wrote and kept it – and Anita herself – in their hearts.

Most of all, Anita loved nothing more than her family. Her family and friends loved nothing more than Anita.
