Allan D. Gallant

Obituary

Allan David Gallant died at home on July 24 surrounded by family after a short illness. The entrepreneur and family patriarch was 87. Allan was husband of Carol Gallant and the son of Louis Gallant and Sarah Green Gallant, both of whom worked in the family wholesale grocery business, B. Green and Company, founded by his grandfather in 1915.

Allan graduated from City College high school and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. The lifelong mentor and job creator was certified as a CPA at the age of 22. He used his expertise throughout a career focused on business development. After college, he worked for B. Green and led an initiative to automate the company’s billing system installing the company’s first IBM system.

Allan joined the Ford Foundation-funded National Council for Equal Business Opportunity to promote minority-owned grocery stores throughout underserved communities across the United States. There he met his future wife, Carol, while teaching a course in accounting. He and Carol married in 1977. While consulting with the Community Economic Development Corporation of Alaska, Allan was recruited to run the Alaska Commercial Company—originally known as the Russian American Trading Company. ACC served as a grocery and general merchandise store as well as buying gold and fur from people throughout the state. He grew the company to become a major economic force in the growing state.

Allan is survived by his wife, Carol (nee Daniels); children; Karen Askin, Ronald (Debbie) Gallant, Lisa Gallant (Joe Raeder); Ann (Jim) Hardin, and Sam (Alethea) Gallant; brother, Philip (Ann) Gallant; sister-in-law, Suzanne Gallant, brother-in-law, Bill (Asako) Daniels, He was the proud grandfather of 14 and great-grandfather of 9. He was predeceased by his brother, Murray Gallant and parents, Louis and Sarah Gallant.

Services at Sol Levinson's Chapel, 8900 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville, MD 21208, on Monday, July 26th, 2021 at 3:00 pm. Interment Beth Tfiloh Cemetery - 5800 Windsor Mill Road. Please omit flowers. Contributions in his memory may be sent to Stella Maris Hospice, 2300 Dulaney Valley Road, Timonium, MD 21093 or the Blooming Prairie Foundation, Stephanie Ricketts Grants Administrator, c/o Willy Street Grocery Co-op, 1457 East Main Street, Madison, WI 53703. The family will be observing shiva at 707 Hillstead Drive, Lutherville-Timonium, MD 21093 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 5-9 pm with a shiva sevice at 7 pm.
