Lawrence Alan Klong

Obituary

Lawrence Alan Klong, born March 29, 1938, in Chicago, IL, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2025, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. He was predeceased by his parents, Eva and Harold Klong; his sister, Judy Klong; and his son, Steven Klong. He is survived by his loving wife, Mellody Klong, and their dog, Coco; his brother Bob (Cindy) Klong, his daughter, Lisa Klong; his son, Michael (Breea) Klong; and his cherished grandchildren, Mila and Jacob Klong.

Larry, also known as LK or Steinberg to his son, was a hard-working, funny, and caring man who brought joy to everyone he met.  Growing up in Rogers Park, he began his career while attending DePaul University, co-leading his father’s small trucking business and transforming it into one of the largest regional transportation companies with hubs throughout the Midwest.   He also served as President of the Illinois Trucking Association.

He was an inspiring business leader, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Larry had a unique gift for making people laugh with just a glance. In retirement, he enjoyed golfing with friends, spending time with his wife and family, and making his grandkids smile. An avid sports fan, he passed down his passion for the White Sox, Bulls, and Bears through the generations.

Larry was also a charitable man. He brought clothes to the homeless under Wacker Drive and contributed to Jewish and scholarship foundations. When asked how he wanted to be remembered, he said, "That he was kind, respectful, charitable, and always tried to do the right thing. You can’t do this life alone, and it is the people around you who help you succeed in life."

Although Larry’s physical presence is gone, his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us. May his memory be a blessing, his legacy carried forth, and his light shine brightly in our hearts.

A service to honor Larry Klong's life will be held on Monday, February 17, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. CT at Am Shalom, 840 Vernon Ave., Glencoe and will be live-streamed on Larry's webpage at www.goldmanfuneralgroup.com. The family only interment will take place at Westlawn Cemetery. A celebration of Larry's life will be held this summer in Highland Park. In lieu of flowers donations, the family kindly requests donations to the American Heart Association. Info: The Goldman Funeral Group (847) 478-1600.
