In Loving Memory of

Carol A. Reed

Obituary

Carol Ann Reed, M.D. of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and Glencoe, Illinois, passed away in Florida on June 5, 2018, at age 79, after battling amyloidosis.

Carol was born in Queens, New York, on September 17, 1938, the eldest child and only daughter of Simon and Gladys Lieberman. After attending Boston University, Carol earned a medical degree from the Chicago Medical School in 1964. Though she never considered herself a pioneer, she was the only woman in her medical school class. Her novel and pioneering place in the medical field was chronicled by a major Chicago newspaper in a 1962 article titled, “A Potential Petticoat Physician." It included one particularly fitting quote from Carol: "I know that most girls are busy grabbing husbands, taking European jaunts and living the social whirl. And I'm all for that. But I don't feel it's a complete life. There should be more to living--with me it happens to be medicine." After completing her training, Carol maintained a dermatology practice in Northbrook, Illinois until 1980, when she decided to devote her full energy to raising her three children--a surprising life choice to everyone but her, and one which prompted a guest appearance on The Phil Donohue Show. Later, with her kids grown, she turned her considerable talents to financial investment, another endeavor in which she excelled and continued to enjoy until the day she passed.

While at Chicago Medical School, Carol met Gerald Reed, a student at the neighboring University of Illinois College of Dentistry. The two married on June 21, 1966 and devotedly cherished each other for the ensuing 52 years. In addition to her husband, Carol is survived by her children, Kevin, Kyle and Kerrie Reed, M.D.; her daughters-in-law, Jennifer Barrett and Helena Reed; her grandchildren, Emma Rosamond Reed and William Simon Reed (named after her beloved father); her brother, Eric Lieberman and sister-in-law Kathy Lieberman. She was preceded by her brother Mark Lieberman. Her unparalleled strength, wisdom, beauty and loving kindness will be deeply missed but will forever remain a source of comfort and inspiration to her family and friends.

The family attended a graveside service on June 8, 2018.
