Charles Irving Bloomgarden 83 – of Huntington, NY, passed away on February 20, 2020. Charles was born on April 19, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY to Morris and Gertrude Bloomgarden and raised in Laurelton, NY. After attending high school, he attended Clark University and then went on to earn his medical degree from New York University. He joined the Huntington community during his service as US Navy Lieutenant in 1961. Following his service, Dr. Bloomgarden went into private practice as an ophthalmologist in Huntington, with advanced training in neuro-ophthalmology. He loved his work, his patients and the community. Dr. Bloomgarden took on several leadership roles, including Chief of Ophthalmology at Huntington Hospital (1983-1995), and Chair of the Guide Dog Association of Smithtown. After fifty years of practice, upon retirement, Dr. Bloomgarden regularly participated in the PEIR (Personal Enrichment in Retirement) group at Hofstra University, as he loved to learn. He will be greatly missed not only by friends and family, but patients and colleagues, all who experienced his smile and kind heart. He is survived by his wife and children. A graveside service will be held today, Sunday, at 11:00 am at New Montefiore Cemetery, West Babylon, NY. Immediately following the service, a gathering for close family and friends will be held at the Bloomgarden home in Huntington, 9 White Deer Court, Huntington, NY, 11743. Shiva will continue this week at the Bloomgarden home: Monday 2-7; Tuesday 2-7; Wednesday 2-7; Thursday 2-7 and Friday 2-5. The family asks any contributions in his memory be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease. Shiva will be observed at the Bloomgarden Residence, 9 White Deer Court, Huntington NY 11743, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 2-7 PM each day.
