Obituary

Violet “Vy” Seltzer (nee Purwin) age 96, longtime resident of Evanston, died peacefully surrounded by family on December 4th in Santa Barbara, CA. Violet was predeceased by Seymour, her beloved and devoted husband of 64 years. She was the fiercely proud mother of Scott (Jill) and Gary. The wonderfully loving grandmother of Stacey (Cate) Seltzer and Chelsea (Theo) Seltzer, and their mother Shary, Violet delighted and reveled in her great grandchildren, Zoe and Scarlet Seltzer and Octavia and Alistair Rosenblum. And her other great grandchildren, Frankie and Birdie Darrow, Pace and Paloma Capone, and Ellen and Simon Darrow. She was the beloved Auntie Vy to Candy, Ina, Diane, Steve, Mimi, Penny, Jill, Judy, Barbara, Michael, Danny, Katie, Melissa and numerous grand and great-grand nephews and nieces. Nothing gave her more pleasure than time spent with family.

Violet went by many names - Violet Dorothy Charlotte Peggy-Lou Purwin Seltzer - but she had a singular spirit and joy for life. Always on the go, she loved the arts – theater, dance, music, movies - discovering new places, new restaurants. She loved traveling with Seymour, being with her friends and attending her children’s, grandchildren’s, and great grandchildren’s, well, anything - baseball, soccer, basketball, dance recital, musical, play – she was always there! And, she loved ice cream.

She was a teacher – over 30 years in the Chicago public schools. And she was a tap dancer – twice a week until she hung up her tap shoes at age 86. She loved cooking for her family, always delicious, always much more than anyone could possibly eat. Oh, and she loved ice cream.
We will miss her smile, her humor, her unbounded and unconditional love, and her wonderful spirit.

Due to current health mandates, services at Shalom Memorial Park will be private. We will celebrate Violet when we can all be together – because that’s how she would want it!
As a passionate, lifelong supporter of theater, dance and the performing arts, a fitting tribute to Violet would be a donation to the non-profit theater or dance company of your choice.
