Obituary
Dr. Sheldon Lee Leibowitz passed away on Sunday July 18, 2021, at the age of 91. He is survived by his beloved wife Janet Leibowitz (nee Shapiro); children Fran Leibowitz (Debbie), Sam Leibowitz (Martha), and Amie Smith (Alan); sister Iris Pevner, grandchildren Pamela Leibowitz, Larry Leibowitz, Kara Boyd (Danny), Adam Leibowitz, Jennifer Hilton (Tim), Michael Leibowitz, Michelle Smith, and Jordan Leibowitz; and great grandsons Chase Hilton and Ryder Boyd.
Sheldon was a native of Baltimore and graduate from Baltimore City College High School. He earned his Doctor of Optometry at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and then served in the Korean War.
He practiced Optometry for 60 years, was active in the local and national Optometric Associations, was the Director of the Maryland Optometric Center, and in 1973 was honored as Maryland Optometrist of the Year.
He earned additional degrees at the Univ of Baltimore, Loyola College, and John Hopkins to better serve his patients and enhance his administrative skills.
He served on the board of multiple professional, social, and charitable organizations. For many decades he served on the Board of Directors of the Regal Bank (now WestBanco Bank), which was co-founded by his father Samuel.
He had a deep connection with his faith. He enjoyed reading, classical music, travel, and the Baltimore sports teams. He was devoted to his wife Janet for 68 years and cherished time spent with grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Services at Sol Levinson & Bros., 8900 Reisterstown Road, Baltimore, MD 21208 on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at 3:30pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Gilchrist Hospice Care, 11311 McCormick Rd., Ste. 350, Hunt Valley, MD, 21031, or any charity of your choice. The family will be in mourning at 1828 Courtyard Circle (Greene Tree), Baltimore, MD 21208 Tuesday evening with a service at 7 pm and Wednesday beginning at 11 am with a service at 7 pm.
