Obituary
We are saddened to announce the passing of Rory Rabin Samberg. Rory succumbed to respiratory complications on September 4, 2022. After successfully receiving a lung transplant earlier this year, she was stricken with a deeply debilitating infection that she and her family could not overcome. Rory passed away peacefully with her family by her side. Rory was 74.
Born in Indianapolis in 1948, Rory spent more than 64 years in her hometown before moving to Lincolnshire, IL in 2012 to be closer to her beloved daughter, Blair, and her cherished sister, Wendy. But it was in Indianapolis where her story was first forged. Rory Rabin was the oldest daughter of Beverly and Joe Rabin and after a nearly 10 year wait she gained a sister, Wendy. Rory once described her life on Spring Mill Lane with her mother, father and her sister as “absolutely perfect.”
When she was in Junior High School she met a boy who would become her lifelong partner. Her romance with David Samberg began when they were 14 years old and spanned more than seven decades. They were married for 42 years. Never has there been a couple more suited for each other.
The greatest outcome of their relationship was a beautiful baby in 1982, Blair. Rory proved to be the quintessential image of a mother, giving Blair the skill, grace and strength that we all see in her today.
Along the way, Rory and Wendy had to endure the loss of both their parents. This made for an even tighter bond between these two sisters.
When considering her dear friends in Indianapolis, it was almost unimaginable to ever think she would relocate anywhere else, but when Blair graduated college and moved to Chicago, where Wendy was already living, a mighty force begin to brew. And after her first grandchild came along, the magnetic pull was irresistible. Rory and David moved from the town they had lived in their entire lives and settled in Lincolnshire, IL. Over the next decade they added three more wonderful grandchildren.
Rory called her family her “Wheel.” We were all the “spokes” and she was the “hub” that connected us and held us together. She made everyone feel special because she knew exactly what each spoke needed. Her spokes were her husband, David; her sister, Wendy; her brother-in-law, Darrell; her daughter, Blair; her son-in-law, Michael; and her precious grandchildren, Harrison, Maxwell, Graham and Isabelle. Our wheel is broken without our hub. It will roll on somehow, but it will forever be a bumpy road without Rory.
