Obituary

Robert "Bob" Melvin Aberg, 92, of Lincolnwood, IL, passed away on the evening of February 21, 2022. Bob struggled with Alzheimer's for several years, and his family is comforted knowing that he passed peacefully at home with his wife, Shirley, at his side. Bob was born in Chicago to Samuel and Rose Aberg (née Ettelson) on May 19, 1929, the younger brother to Gilbert and Sylvia. Bob was a life-long resident of the Chicago area. At age 10, Bob got his first box camera, which inspired him to a long and successful career in photography and photographic equipment. He worked for Standard Photo, Midwest Photo and for several magazines, during which time, he worked in all aspects of the industry from accounting to sales and photo shoots. Within his family, he was recognized as a gifted speaker and poet. His favorite poem The Closed Door was published in 1968. Bob married the love of his life, Shirley Fenger, on August 12, 1962. They met earlier that same year at a dance at Temple Sholom in Chicago, where she appreciated Bob's kind and sincere nature. His beloved daughter, Mari Fae, believed her father to not "have a mean bone in this body". Shirley and Bob led an active life and enjoyed tennis, golf, bicycling together and travel. Bob led his family through the difficult times when his daughter passed in 2010. At his daughter's wedding, he wrote and delivered one of his family's favorite poems about painting the colors of life. His entire family misses Bob terribly; he is survived by his wife, Shirley, his son, Dan, and his grandchildren by his daughter, Zoe and Zachary Katz, along with their father, David. To keep everyone safe and healthy, the interment service and shiva will be private.
