Obituary

Richard Arthur Borenstein died at home on July 10, 2021, after a long illness. A lifelong resident of Baltimore, Maryland, Richard was born on July 15, 1949. He was the son of the late Ruth Wolfson Borenstein and Robert Lee Borenstein. Richard was educated in Baltimore City public schools (including City High School) and received both a Bachelor of Arts in Quantitative Studies and a Master of Science in Engineering from Johns Hopkins University.

Richard had a long career in the field of computers. Early on he was an engineer and software manager for AAI Corporation, Bendix, and Sygnetron. Starting in 1984, he was a software consultant for Westinghouse Electric Corp. Manufacturing Systems & Technology and later for Westinghouse/Northrup Grumman Oceanic Division. He worked at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office from 1998 until his retirement in 2018. He also was an associate professor at Towson State University, where he taught computer science courses part-time from 1971-1987. He was a sports car enthusiast and enjoyed owning and driving Miata, Lexus, and Mercedes cars.

In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his grandparents--Jacob Borenstein and Alma Minz Borenstein and Benjamin Louis Wolfson and Minnie Williams Wolfson—and by a sister, Alma Lynn Borenstein Ohly. His one surviving sister is Barbara Borenstein Blumenthal, of Northampton, Massachusetts.
