Obituary

Michael Cotter Greenfield, 87, loving husband of Rochelle for 57 wonderful years; adored father to Julie (Michael) Solot, James (Jill), Robert (Julianna), and Victoria; loving brother to Marianne (Ronald) Handler and Richard (Carol); cherished grandpa to Rebecca, Ariana, Eloise, Daniel, Casey, Eli, Aynslie, and Cordelia. Michael became a lawyer in 1957 and excelled in his role as counsel to dozens of union health, welfare, and pension funds until his retirement in 2010. He was perhaps best known professionally for having led numerous successful contract negotiations for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra musicians and the Lyric Opera musicians. But he also represented thousands of workers of all trades throughout Chicago and Indiana. He served his profession as a hearing officer on the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission for many years. Michael was admired by everybody who knew him for his quick wit and his vast knowledge of seemingly every topic imaginable. He liked to say he learned something new every day. He learned to fly as a young boy, was qualified to solo by the age of 10 and was an avid pilot well into his adult life. He loved all manner of technology, traveled extensively throughout his life with his family and made more visits to Disney World than could be counted. But what was most important was spending time with his family, who adored him in equal measure. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to NorthShore Hospice https://foundation.northshore.org/hospice, or the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org.
