Leonard Leibowitz died of natural causes on the morning of September 25th at home on Lake Shore Drive where he lived since 1974. Leonard Leibowitz, age 90, beloved husband for 45 years of Stephanie nee Melkin. Loving father of Michael Leibowitz, Naomi Leibowitz and Zoë Leibowitz. Dear brother of the late Frances Leibowitz (the late Richard) Cohen. Leonard Leibowitz was born on February 5th, 1931 in the Bronx, New York to the late David Leibowitz and the late Miriam Scheinbaum Leibowitz. He attended the Bronx High School of Science and New York University for undergraduate and graduate school, receiving a Ph.D in Chemistry in 1956. After a two year stint at Dupont in Baltimore, Leibowitz moved to Chicago for a position at Argonne National Laboratory. He ultimately became a Distinguished Senior Chemist at Argonne National Laboratory for 50 years. In addition to his career, Leibowitz enjoyed the arts, frequently attending the Lyric Opera, Art Institute of Chicago, and Gene Siskel Film center. His love of the arts collided with his expertise in chemistry in his role as a volunteer in the conservation department at the Art Institute from 2009-2013. He was known for his playful and sharp sense of humor, deep intellect, and terrible penmanship. He was also an avid reader, cook, photographer, and classical guitar player.
