Karen Hill

Obituary

Karen Hill (nee Meder), of Owings Mills, Maryland, passed away on Friday, November 5th, 2021 at the age of 72. She is survived by her beloved husband, Jim Hill; son, Oliver Hill; and brothers, Walter (Sonja) Meder, and Robert Meder. She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Louise Meder.

Karen was born in Chicago. Her parents were married when they were just kids (16 &17) and had children soon after they were married, so they really didn’t know what they were doing. Family life was hard for the kids, interspersed with good times. Luckily for Karen she grew up in an extended family with fun loving aunts, uncles and grandparents. These wonderful people showed Karen the joys of life. Unfortunately, her family moved to the suburbs away from her extended family.

She left home as soon as she could and went to National College in Evanston Il. In Evanston it was the first time she felt at home. She left college and became a “Hippy Chick”. Karen always followed her heart more than her head. Some would say she was impulsive. She had many very wild experiences. Through all her harrowing and amazing adventures, she always prevailed because of her open, honest, and kind spirit. She learned and grew from each of these experiences.

In Evanston, many years later, Karen met her husband to be. It took her seven years to notice his good qualities, including their mutual love of Tai Chi which was an important part of her being. They were married in her beloved Evanston in 1984. Jim dragged her back to Baltimore with him. There she completed her college education as an art teacher, and had their son Oliver. However, she was not suited to teaching. Art was her passion, with Jim’s encouragement she started making handcrafted jewelry and eventually was the pioneer in resurrecting the nearly lost art of lamp work glass beadmaking. Karen and Jim did as many as 23 juried craft shows per year for 30 years, making many friends both fellow craftsmen and people who loved her work. When she retired from the craft world, she turned her artistic endeavors to gardening and entertaining.

To paraphrase an old Native American proverb: there is the dark, unhealthy side, and light, nurturing side in each of us – the question is “which side will prevail?” The one you feed. Karen believed in and diligently practiced universal peace; one person, one interaction at a time. She was always seeking out beauty, love, and harmony; in herself, in others, and in the world.
