Obituary

Beatrice Berlin, age 85

Beatrice passed away on October 17 in the quiet of her own house after a valiant battle with cancer. Beatrice was born in Chicago to Leon and Dora Begoun and grew up on the west side attending Marshall High School. Beatrice grew up with her cousins Barbara Zucker, Beverly Fried, Vivian Rosen and Jerry Mosak. In 1957, she met Barney Berlin, who became her husband of almost 63 years. Together they had a family of Larry, Jordan (and his wife Sara) and Sandra (and her husband of Mark Mattozzi).

Beatrice had degrees in education from Roosevelt University of Chicago as well as Northeastern Illinois University and Loyola University of Chicago. Beatrice was very proud of her work teaching and consulting in the Chicago Public Schools including many in Rogers Park as well as teaching teachers at Loyola and Concordia. Her specialty was reading, and she spent much time helping children advance that skill. Beatrice had an adventurous spirit that led her to undertake many trips with her husband, family and friends, through the US and Europe. Her willingness to challenge authority on behalf of students also helped her and her husband and friends form Concerned Parents of Rogers School which helped improve education at her children’s school. She was particularly grateful to her husband, her cousins and her many friends for their long lives of fun and happiness together. She is also grateful to each of them for helping her in her battle against cancer. They accompanied her on her many trips to Northwestern Cancer Center, uplifted her spirits and gave her the love and comfort she needed to get through the ordeal.

It was with the utmost of love that her granddaughter, Francesca, cared for her and loved her. Francesca held her hand, cut her hair, helped her dress and conversed and laughed with her. This love helped Beatrice in her fight against cancer. Mark Mattozzi, Beatrice's son-in-law, whose care and generosity was unparallel by putting Beatrice and the late Barney's health and safety above all else.
