Obituary
Arthur Victor Appel, age 99.
Loving husband to the late Mary (nee Herzog). Beloved father of daughters Sarah Appel and Juliet Duncanson and son-in-law Alan Duncanson and cherished brother of Dorothy Cohen. Arthur received a degree from Wilson Junior College and during World War II served first as a munitions inspector and later in research for the war effort on the development and building of the first magnetic recording devices with long-time friend Marvin Camras. After the war, he continued working as a Physicist at the Armour Research Foundation, which later became the Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute. Much of his work was in Optical Physics, which included development of cameras used in space flights and the development of fiber optics. In his retirement, Arthur pursued his interest in amateur radio (N9JKK), and his love of sailing, continuing to sail his boat on Lake Michigan until he was 90. His family and friends will remember him for his devotion and help, his love of science and music, his keen interest in the world and his sense of humor. He was lovingly cared for in his last years by his daughter Sarah and his devoted caregivers Ritza, Virginia, Elizabeth, Annie, Winnie and May. Service Tuesday, June 5, 12 noon at Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism, 1221 County Line Rd., Highland Park, IL 60035. Interment private.
