Obituary

Sheldon S. Tobin

An accomplished and influential scholar, and a caring family man. Beloved husband of Badonna Reingold, Sheldon Tobin passed away October 20, 2021 peacefully in his sleep. Born on August 10, 1931 his intellectual prowess was evident at an early age when he was admitted to the University of Chicago at the age of 16. He had a brief break from academia during the Korean war where he served in the Army as a Medical technician stationed in Seattle. Eventually he joined the faculty at the University of Chicago and was instrumental in the field of gerontology. He published groundbreaking articles and books, and conducted pioneering research whose effects are still evident today in the caring of the elderly. He would later become a full professor at the State University of New York at Albany, and serve as Director of Ringel Institute of Gerontology while also teaching at Albany Medical College. He was a loving father to his son Marc, his daughter Valerie and his first wife Maureen. However his life was not without tragedy as he lost both Maureen and Valerie to cancer. Throughout his life he enjoyed traveling, tennis, attending the theater and other cultural institutions, reading, enjoying good food, watching the Bears or Bulls play, and spending time with family. He is survived by his wife Badonna Reingold, his son Marc Tobin, his two brothers Norman and Arnold Tobin, his son-in-law Rodrigo Diaz-Tobin, his grand-daughter Kiki Diaz-Tobin, and his  step son David Reingold and his family, Lynn Hooker and their children Jack and Jessica. There will be a small gathering to commemorate him on Sunday, November 7th, 2PM at the Park Room of The Heritage at Millennium Plaza on 130 North Garland Court on the 9th floor.
