Obituary

Dorothy “Dolly” Dan, nee Wohl, age 85, of Boca Raton, FL and formerly of Deerfield, IL, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2022, 9 days short of her 86th birthday, with family at her side. Dolly is survived by the love of her life and best friend, husband Merwyn, with whom she shared 67 years of unwavering love, respect, happiness and adventure. Dolly was a loving Mom and is survived by her four children, Margie (Earl) Stone, Bruce (Wendy) Dan, Larry (Natasha Chalmers) Dan, and Susan (Ronnie) Bernstein; Grandma and Mana to eight grandchildren, Jacob (Adina) Dan, Nathan (fiancée, Sara) Dan, Chava (Ben) Bashary, Nikki (fiancé, Austin) Bernstein, David Bernstein, Danny Bernstein, Pippa Dan and Hannah Dan; and GrandmaGG to eight great granchildren, Yitzy, Meira, Ruvy, Rochie, and Chananel Dan, Shalom Ovadia, Batya and Shalhevet Bashary. She is also survived by many generations of nieces and nephews. Dolly was predeceased by her parents and her five siblings.

Dolly met her “Honey” when she was only 15 and she never looked back. Merwyn and Dolly started their married life together in Hawaii before moving back to Peoria in 1956 where Dolly was born and grew up. Raising their children in Arlington Heights and then Deerfield, she was always involved as room mother, scout leader, and chaperone to a myriad of after school programs. She was an active volunteer at Beth Tikvah Congregation and at Highland Park Hospital where she was a volunteer for 25 years, a member of Ravinia Green Country Club and loved to play golf, canasta, mah jongg, the nickel slot machines and shopping for her children and grandchildren. While her children were away at summer camp, they could look forward to receiving daily letters, with treats, from Mom. Dolly loved to host a variety of parties, especially the annual family Thanksgiving dinner. She even found time to start her own small business designing and selling ultrasuede accessories. Everyone, also, looked forward to tasting her closely held recipe of homemade toffee.

Dolly loved traveling the world with Merwyn creating lifelong memories together. Dolly was proud of her family and relished in every one of their accomplishments. There was truly nothing she wouldn’t do for her family. While Dolly cherished her family and friends above all else, she also had a knack for befriending strangers – she was just that kind of person. She will be truly missed by all her family and all whose lives she touched.
