Obituary

Barbara Gunther, age 84, was born in Chicago, IL and grew up in Oak Park, IL. She was the youngest child of Louis and Frieda Zahn. She was ahead of her time, a woman working in the business world alongside her husband Allen Gunther (predeceased at the age of 66) at the Louis Zahn Data Service where she worked in sales and assisted in running the company. One should never have been fooled by her kind, gentle demeanor, as in business she was a force to be reckoned with, setting an incredible example for her three girls, Ginger Siegel, Jeri Gunther and Terry Gross, that they could do and be anything. Her passions included boating and spending time with her grandchildren and dogs, having been the owner of seven dogs over her lifetime. Barbara continued to defy odds, earning her associate degree in business in her 70's, something she always wanted to complete, and serving as Commodore for the Waukegan Yacht Club. She was one of the most generous and giving human beings with a major highlight of her life taking her children and grandchildren on a trip every year to surround herself in love. She is survived by her children, Ginger, Jeri and Terry; beloved sons-in-law Joel Gross and David Siegel; dearest grandchildren, Michelle (Adam), Adam (Andrea), Jamie, Josh (Melanie), Benjamin, Seth and Dillon and great grandchildren Kloe, Shay and Jay; and her brother Melvyn Zahn. She is also survived by her dear and loyal friend, companion and caretaker, Luz Cepeda who we are eternally grateful to. Be at rest, dearest Mom and Barbara, our love for you knows no bounds. Service will be held Friday, 2:30 p.m. at the Shalom Memorial Park Mausoleum, Arlington Heights, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Journey Care Hospice, www.journeycare.org, or PAWS of Chicago, www.pawschicago.org.
