Obituary

Hyma J. Levin nee Jacobs passed away on July 5th, 2022, having recently attained the age of 80. Hyma is survived by her children, Oren (Beth) Levin and Joshua (Jessica) Levin, and her grandchildren, Alex, Daniel, Peri, Aubrey, and Eli. She is also survived by her brother George (Stacy) Jacobs and sister Harriet (John Domke) Jacobs, with whom she had an extraordinary relationship. John and Harriet sheltered Hyma during the beginning of Covid, keeping her safe. They were also her rock during her recent illness.

Hyma gave of herself freely to others and helped to enrich Jewish traditions. She was the Director of Education at Beth Emet The Free Synagogue in Evanston, Illinois, for many years, and remained an active congregant following her retirement.

She had a beautiful voice and, along with Harriet, sang in various choirs. She visited Israel on numerous occasions and looked forward to more travel.

One of the kindest and gentlest people you could imagine, Hyma was universally loved. Four years ago, Hyma moved into The Carrington, a beautiful retirement community, where she quickly became one of its most beloved and active members, eventually serving as president of the Residents Council. She lent her unique personality and passion to bringing more Jewish experiences to other residents including singing and Shabbat services, Seder dinners, and teaching monthly classes about historical Jewish themes. She enjoyed playing bridge and was proud that in her final game last month, she won the ‘quarters’ with her winning hand. Hyma was also instrumental in starting many of the activities at The Carrington. Her absence leaves a void in the community.

Service will be Friday, July 8th at 1:30 PM at Beth Emet The Free Synagogue 1224 Dempster Street, Evanston, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hadassah Chicago-North Shore, 60 Revere Drive, Northbrook, IL 60062, www.hadassah.org or to Chicago Coalition for InterReligious Learning, 7450 Skokie Blvd. Skokie, IL 60077, https://sites.google.com/site/theccirl/ or to Beth Emet The Free Synagogue, 1224 Dempster Street, Evanston, IL, www.bethemet.org
