Obituary

Stanley Jay Horn passed away November 6, 2018, at the age of 80, after a seven year battle with brain lymphoma, which he fought with his usual determination and strength. The son of Isadore and Shirley Horn, he was a lifelong resident of Chicago, graduating from Austin High School in1955, the University of Illinois, Champagne/Urbana in 1959, and Northwestern University School of Law in 1962, where he was a member of Law Review. He was a practicing immigration attorney from 1963 until 2016, specializing in deportation defense at a succession of firms where he was a principal, and Additionally, he was on the board of HIAS (Hebrew Immigration Society) for many years. Stanley was an avid reader and loved the arts, especially theater, and being on stage was a special joy for him. As a board member at Victory Gardens Theater for over twenty years, he helped guide it to many years of success. He participated in their yearly amateur "Casting Auction" musical theater productions, making up with enthusiasm for what he may have lacked in musical talent. Involved in athletics all his life, he played football in high school, baseball at the U of I and was an avid biker, sailor and runner. He ran seven LA marathons in his sixties, proudly achieving his goal of finishing in under four hours. But the real joy in his life came from his family. He was a devoted father to Judd (Sara Malakoff) and Lucia (Steve Larson) and grandfather to Zachary, Benjamin and Sophie Larson, and Alexandra and Madeleine Horn, who all reside in Brooklyn Heights, NY. He was a loving husband to Daryl Sharwell Horn, his second wife, and they spent thirty happy years together. He was previously married to Linda Bley Horn. Stanley was an extreme extrovert who could start a conversation with anyone, anywhere. He had a large and diverse circle of devoted friends and an incredible lust for life. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, November 11th, 2:00 PM at Temple Sinai, 15 W Delaware Place, Chicago. In Stanley’s honor, donations to HIAS are suggested.
