Lauretta Feldman

Obituary

Lauretta Feldman peacefully left this earth at the age of 88 in her home on the morning of October 26, 2020, after taking her daily walk. The daughter of Michael and Mary Mennone of New Haven, Connecticut, she was predeceased by siblings Angelo Mennone, Michael Mennone, Paul Mennone, and Rose Pizzuti. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 68 years Herbert Byron Feldman, brother Burt Mennone, and sisters Anita (Jim) Hillman, and Marie Ciresi. The beloved mother of seven children, she leaves behind David (Barbara Schreibman) Feldman, Aaron Feldman, Linda Sebastian, Emmanuel (Pascale Delache-Feldman) Feldman, Jonathan (Lisa Richmond) Feldman, Joseph (Katie Lacher) Feldman, and Deborah (Ed Turner) Feldman. She rejoiced in her grandchildren: Joshua Feldman, Rachel (Carlos Quinones) Feldman, Leo Feldman, Jacob Feldman, Zachary Feldman, Benjamin Feldman, Solomon Feldman, Moshe Feldman, Raphael Delache-Feldman, Avi Feldman, Nathan Feldman, Edward Turner, Loren Turner, Morgan Turner, Leia Feldman, Chloe Feldman, and Emmett Feldman.

She lived a remarkable life. She attended The Juilliard School of Music on full scholarship for voice, where she met her husband, and music played a huge part for the rest of her life and enriched her family’s life. As a soprano, she performed in some of the most distinguished concert halls in the New York area, including a lead role in La Boheme at Carnegie Hall, and was praised for her performances by music critics throughout the region. While she enjoyed singing, one of her passions was playing the viola de gamba.

As a physician’s assistant and devoted wife, she worked with her husband Herbert in his medical practice for well over 50 years. A Renaissance woman who was certified as an X-Ray technician and mental health counselor, she was also notably one of the first licensed acupuncturists in the state of New York.

As the mother of seven children, she believed that the job of a parent was to create independent children. She took this job seriously, and made a positive impact on all her children. She taught her children to love music, to work with their hands, and to “put the horse blinders on” when times were tough.

She loved her family and the outdoors. She could often be seen in her garden doing what needed to be done in order to produce vegetables, flowers, or anything else. She was a dedicated walker and runner, and even at the age of 80, ran a Thanksgiving “Turkey Trot” 5K with her grandchildren. She loved to climb trees, and was seen doing so well into her 70s. She was physically active and exercising until the day she died.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that if you so desire, you make a charitable donation in her name, to the Viola de Gamba Society (https://vdgsa.org/pgs/support.html).

Lauretta will be buried in a private ceremony, with a memorial service celebrating her life at a later date.
