In Loving Memory of

Richard H. Newman

Obituary

Richard Newman was born in Chicago on October 12, 1942 at Lutheran Deaconess Hospital to Cy and Belle (Glickman) Newman. He grew up in Chicago and Oak Park, graduating from Oak Park River Forest High School in 1960. He briefly attended the University of Illinois at Chicago – Navy Pier with the intent of studying Aeronautical Engineering. He voluntarily enlisted in the US Marine Corps Reserves from 1962-1964, and received an honorable discharge. He is survived by sons Mitchell (and Julie) and Mark (and Mindy), daughter Julie (and Joel) Simon and longtime companion Marilyn McDole. Grandfather of Jack, Meredith, Martha and Charlie Newman; Hannah and Sam Newman; Lily and Isaac Simon. Always keen to tinker with vehicles and aware that he needed to work for himself, Rich started his first business 50 years ago with a gas station at Grand and LaSalle and moved to Grand and Orleans, with his last location at Milwaukee and Erie. This eventually morphed into Rolling Stock Ltd rentals, supporting Chicago’s commercial production industry, providing vehicles and supplies to photographers and productions including The Blues Brothers, ER, The Fugitive, 16 Candles, The Breakfast Club, Ali, and many others. He retired in 2014.

He really enjoyed life, whether it was sharing a meal with friends and family, heading out on new adventures and was always one to have a book, newspaper or magazine close by. An avid collector of vintage cars and motorcycles and an enthusiastic traveler, he combined these passions by participating in long-distance rallies. Including driving motorcycles and antique vehicles from London to Capetown, Beijing to Paris, around South America, throughout India and Southeast Asia, and in 2000, circumnavigating the globe “Around the World in 80 Days”.
